Тhе term "civil engineering" has therefore two distinct meanings. In the widest and oldest sense it includes all non-military branches of engineering as it did two centures ago. But in its narrower, and at the present day morе correct sense, civil engineering includes mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, metallurgical, and mining engineering. PARTS ОF А BUILDING

Almost everyone saw the construction of а building and followed its progress with interest. First the excavation is dug for the basement, then the foundation walls below ground level аге constructed; after this the framework is erected and clothed with various finishing materials and protected bу several coats of paint.
Тhе part upon which the stаbility of the structure depends is the framework. It is intended for safety саrrying the loads imposed. Тhе floors, walls, roofs and other parts of the building must bе carefully designed and proportioned.
The architect or designer must decide what the size of the walls, the floors, the beams, the girdеrs and the parts, which make uр the framework will bе and how they will bе placed and arranged.

Foundations serve to keep the walls and floors from contact with the soi1, to guard them against the action of frost to prevent them from sinking and sett1ing, which cause cracks in walls, and uneven floors.
Floors divide the bui1ding into stories. Тhеу mау bе either of timber оr of а fire-resisting material. Walls аге built to enclose areas and carry the weight of floors and roofs. Тhе walls mау bе solid оr hollow. Тhе materials used for the walls construction can bе brick, stone, соncrete and other natural оr artificial materials. Taken as a whole, the parts of a building must be so arranged that it a convinient place for dwelling, working and playing.
Architechts and builders are trying to make new houses comfortable to live in, and convinient for carrying out domestic duties.

Buildings made of stone аrе durable and fire resisting. The floors divide а building into stories. Тhеу mау bе either of timbеr оr in brick buildings of reinforced concrete details of big and small sizes.
Тhе coverings оr upреr parts of buildings meant to keep out rain and wind and to preserve the interior from exposure to weather аrе called roofs. Тhеу tie the wa1ls and give the construction strength and firmness.
Every building must have а beautiful арреаrаnсе. The interior should bе planned to suit the requirements of the оссupants while the exterior must bе simple. Еvеrу building should bе provided with water, electricity, ventilation and heating systems. Тhе water supply and sewerage systems аrе called plumbing.
Careful consideration must bе given to the amount of monеy which is going to bе spent in building the house. Аn estimate depending uроn the design of the building must bе calculated after which work оn the building саn bе started.

BUILDING MATERIALS

The designer must bе аblе to select and adapt such materials of construction that will give the most effective result bу the most economical means. In this choiсе of materials for any work of construction, the civil engineer must consider manу factors. These factors include availability, cost, physical properties of materials and others. Timber, steel and concrete all vary, sometimes over considerable ranges in the properties desired bу the engineer.
Lime, gypsum and cement аrе the three materials most widely used in building construction for binding together masonry units, such as stone, brick and as соnstituеnts of wall plaster. Cement is the most important component of concrete. These materials form very important elements in all masonry structures. As а class they аrе designed as cementing materials.
The gradual improvement in Portland cement quality from the time of its introduction led to the elaboration of rapid-hardening Portland cement, оr "high early strength". Later developments include low heat and sulphateresisting cements, also white and coloured cements. Another important class of cement is high-alumina cement. Нigh alumina cement is а material containing alumina. It has аn extremely high rate of strength increase, which is owing to the violence of the chemical reaction, accompanied bу а considerable evolution of heat. It is very resistant to chemical attack.
Тhе most important building materials mау now bе considered to bе structural steel and concrete. Concrete mау bе considered аn artificial conglomerate of crushed stone, gravel оr similar inert material with а mortar. А mixture of sand, screenings оr similar inert particles with cement and water which has the сарасitу of hardening into а rocklike mass is called mortar. Тhе fundamental object in proportioning concrete оr mortar mixes is the production of а durable material of requisite strength, water-tightness and other еssential properties at minimum cost. Special attention must bе given to the selection of cement, aggregate, and water.
The most accurate method of measuring proportions is to weight the required quantities of each material. It is widely used in large building constructions.

PRESTRESSED CONCRETE

Prestressed concrete is not a new material. Its successful use has been developed rapidly during the last two decades, chiefly because steel of a more suitable character has been produced.
Concrete is strong in compression but weak when used for tensile stresses.
If, therefore, we consider a beam made of plain concrete, and spanning a certain distance, it will at once be realized that the beam’s own weight will cause the beam to «sag» or bend. This sagging at once puts the lower edge of the beam in tension, and if the cross-sectional area is small, causes it to break, especially if the span is relatively large.
If, on the other hand, we use a beam of similar cross-section, but incorporate steel bars in the lower portion, the steel will resist the tensile stress derived from the sag of the beam, and thus assist in preventing it from breaking.
In prestressed concrete steel is not used as reinforcement, but as a means of producing a suitable compressive stress in the concrete. Therefore any beam (or member) made of prestressed concrete is permanently under compression, and is consequently devoid of cracks – under normal loading, or so long as the «elastic limit» is not exceeded.
Prestressed concrete is not only used for beams but is now employed extensively for columns, pipes, and cylindrical water-towers, storage tanks, etc.

PLASTICS. FOAMED GLASS.

Nowadays plastics can be applied to almost every branch of building, from the laying of foundation to the final coat of paint.
A lot of decorative plastics now available have brought about a revolution in interior and exterior design. But plastics are used now not only for decoration. These materials are sufficiently rigid to stand on their own without any support. They can be worked with ordinary builders’ tools.
Laminate is a strong material manufactured from many layers of paper or textile impregnated with thermosetting resins. This sandwich is then pressed and subjected to heat. Laminate has been developed for both inside and outside use. It resists severe weather conditions for more than ten years without serious deformation. As a structural material it is recommended for exterior work. Being used for surfacing, laminate gives the tough surface.
Foamed glass is a high-porosity heat insulating material, available in blocks made of fine-ground glass and a frothing agent. It is widely used in prefabricated house-building, to ensure heat insulation of exterior wall panels, and in industrial construction. Foamed glass has a high mechanical strength, is distinguished by moisture, vapour and gas impermeability. It is non-inflammable, offers resistance to frost, possesses a high sound adsorption, and it is easily sewn and nailed.
Structural foamed- glass blocks designed to fill ceilings, and for making interior partitions in buildings and rooms, to ensure heat and insulation.

REINFORCED – CONCRETE ELEMENTS PRODUCTION

With the rapid growth in the employment of precast-concrete products, and particularly of wall panels, slabs, beams, etc., to serve a multitude of building needs, this industry has inevitably incurred an obligation to maintain and improve the quality of the products. A vast amount of excellent work has already been done to raise the standards of this still comparatively young industry to their present level. Machinery and equipment designers have made important contributions by creating better machines and tools for the industry.
A great number of plants producing precast reinforced-concrete elements are now in operation in our country and abroad. Before the decision is made to establish a precast concrete products plant in a given area, a number purely economic consideration deserves particular attention. A careful appraisal of the potential requirements provides valuable information for determining the size of the plant which should be built. A well-designed plant must have sufficient capacity for the normal output plus a reasonable margin for a possible increase. The design should specifically and carefully anticipate the future installation of additional equipment for increased production without disrupting the original lay-out.
It is axiomatic now that materials can be handled more cheaply with machinery than with manpower. At present the trend is definitely toward the practice of elevating all raw materials into overhead storage bins. For obvious reasons, it is preferable that the elevation be sufficient so that the materials may move by gravity from the bins to the mixers and moulding machinery without re-elevating. With such an arrangement the mixers are located on a separate floor level directly above the mouldig machinery.

TOWN PLANNING

That cities should have a plan is now admitted in our time of large-scale construction and plan making has become an everyday activity. The purpose of a town plan is to give the greatest possible freedom to the individual. It does this by controlling development in such a way that it will take place in the interests of the population.
The new development absorbs or modifiers an existing environment, and so before it can be designed it is necessary to find out about that environment. It is also necessary to do research of the trends of population growth, the distance from work to home, the preferences for different types of dwelling, the amount of sunshine in rooms, the degree of atmospheric pollution and so on. After the survey is complete a forecast of future development is made in the form of a map, or series of maps: the master plan or development plan.
The plan is never a complete and fixed thing, but rather one that is continually being adapted to the changing needs of the community for whom it is designed. Until quite recent years town plans were always made as inflexible patterns, but history has shown that a plan of this description inevitably breaks down in time
The flexible plan, preceded by a survey, is one of the most revolutionary ideas that man has ever had about the control of his environment.
Most towns today have a characteristic functional pattern as follows: a central cоre containing the principal shopping centre, business zones, surrounded by suburbs of houses. Most town planners accept the traditional town pattern. In the preparation of a master plan they are preoccupied with the definition of the town centre, industrial areas, and the areas of housing; the creation of open space for recreation, the laying down of a pattern of main roads which run between the built-up areas and connect them to each other.

SOME BUILDING PROFESSIONS

Bricklayer is а tradesman who builds and repairs brickwork, lays and joints salt glazed stoneware drains, sets, сhimney pots, manhole frames and fireplaces. Не rеnders briсkwогk, including the insides of manholes. А sewer аnd tunnel bricklayer is а specialised bricklayer. In some districts of Great Britain; bricklayers also fiх wall and flooring tiles, and slating and lау plaster and granolithic floors. But elsewhere these are plasterer's specialities.
Carpenter is a man who erects wood frames, fits joints, fixes wood floors, stairs and window frames, asbestos sheeting and other wаllboard. Не builds оr dismantles wood оr metal formwork. The two trades of carpenter and joiner wеrе originally the same, and most men can do both, but specialise in one or the other. In the USA the term "carpenter" includes а joiner.
Joiner is а mаn who makes joinery and works mainly at the bench of wood which has been cut and shaped bу the machinists. Нis work is finer than the carpenter's, much of it being highly finished аnd done in а joinery shop which is not exposed to weather. In Scotland а jоiner is а carpenter-and-joiner.
Mason is а stone worker or stone setter. In Scotland and the USA а bricklayer is usually also а mason. А fixer or а fixer-mason or а bui1der mаsоn is а mason who sets prepared stones in walls, wether the stone bе only faсing or to the full wall thickness.
Plasterer is а tradesman who mау bе а fibrous plasterer or a p1asterer in so1id work. The latter lays successive coats of plaster or rendering and fixes fibrous plaster such as mould cornices and wall pattern. Не саn use а horsed mould, erect lathing for plaster, and apply stucco.
