16 and 17
-
Year
-
Olds on Adult Courses

In the UK anyone under the age of 18 is
considered a child. As such, we have an extra
duty of care towards this group of students to
ensure that their welfare needs are
properly
with us.

In addition to the young learne
r programme for
students aged 9
-
17
, we provide extra special
support and provision for students aged 16 or
17 who are studying on adult courses, both in
the sum
mer and
all
year round. In particular:

-

We have a signing
17
-

year
-
olds in reception so that we know
where our students are at all times.

-

We have a special meeting for students
aged 16 and 17 once every two weeks with
our welfare off
icer to ask if they are having
any problems, or to ask if they need any help
or advice about anything
.

-

We hold specific inductions for 16 and 17
-

year
-
olds. This will cover all the same topics
as the usual induction but more time is spent
on talking about
what to do and what not to
do, staying safe in England, how to find help
if it is required and so on.

-

We make all staff aware of which students
are under 18 in class and on activities
undertaken outside the school.

Finally, all of our reception staff know

who
under 18 is and so they will all keep a special
look out for the welfare of these students.

Students between 16 and 17 years of age who
are booked on one of our adult courses must
have a letter signed by their parents stating
that the student has thei
r parents' permission
to travel to the UK to study at Portsmouth
English Language School and that the parent
agrees to their son or daughter studying in
classes with students over the age of 18.
